Beginners Guide to Woodwork

Woodworking is a wide-ranging field in the building and construction industry. It can range from the building of structures such as houses and hotels to small scale furniture and jewelry. As a beginner, you don’t have to fill your toolbox with numerous tools. All you need are the basic ones. Otherwise, you could end up spending a large amount of money too soon in the process.

The basic tools and equipment are the ones you need to use in cutting, measuring, and assembling your woodwork. Once you become more advanced in this field you could then consider more sophisticated machines such as the  X-Carve. The following are guidelines to use in wood working.

1.Familiarize with different types of wood species

Knowing the different types of wood is an advantage to a beginner. This may enable you to assess the suitability of different wood species in making different types of structures or furniture. This is also important as it helps you to know the grain size of different woods therefore helping in choosing proper equipment. This will ultimately help you to limit the costs incurred in replacement of spoilt wood.

2.Working plan

A working plan is the basic thing to start with before engaging in a new woodwork project. The working plan enables you to identify the number of materials required to start the work as well as the necessary equipment and tools. Moreover, it also helps in estimating the time needed to finish the job. In turn it allows you to make necessary changes and adjustments to your project, therefore saving time and cost of production.

3.Setting a proper working space

Most of the woodwork is done in a workshop. That makes it very important to have a spacious and safe working space for your projects. This is where you can set and assemble your working equipment and also store your materials. The working space should be conducive and accommodate different weather conditions such as rain and hot sun.

Children and other people who are not working should be kept away from the workshop to avoid accident which may lead to injuries. In a case where one doesn’t have a workshop, you may choose to conduct your work in your compound, provided the working space is safe.

 4.Assembling proper equipment for woodworking

Once you have prepared your working plan and identified your working space, the next step to take before starting your work assembling the tools and equipment. These will depend on the work and even the type of materials you are using. The most commonly used equipment include a tape measure, cutting saw, drilling machine and a hammer.

The above are the basic tools for joining, cutting and measuring in woodwork. In curving, a 3D X-Carve machine can be used to make different shapes and in creating different impressions on wood work.

For beginners in woodworking, you gain skills with experience. Therefore, it is very important to observe and practice the basics in woodworking as it will set up a foundation for your woodworking career. Most of woodworking skills are often developed when working thus you should not undermine your starting point.
